Beginner Climbing Equipment
Selecting the appropriate gear can be a daunting task for those new to the sport of rock climbing. To assist beginners, I have compiled a list of the essential equipment needed to start climbing outdoors independently. Within each section, I offer my beginner-friendly recommendations, as well as a few alternative options that provide distinct advantages.
Table of Contents
1. Harnesses
A rock climbing harness is an essential piece of equipment for climbers as it helps to secure them to the rope system and prevent falls. A harness typically consists of a waist belt and leg loops that are connected by a series of buckles and straps. To properly put on a rock climbing harness, first, loosen all of the buckles and straps. Then, step into the leg loops and pull the harness up to the waist. Next, tighten the waist belt and leg loops so that the harness fits snugly but not too tight. Finally, double-check that all buckles and straps are securely fastened before starting to climb. Properly fitting and wearing a rock climbing harness is critical for safety while climbing and should be done carefully and diligently.
When it comes to choosing a climbing harness, there are various types of specialty harnesses available for different styles of climbing such as sport, trad, or ice climbing. However, for beginners, a standard all-around harness is a good place to start. The key is to find a harness that you like the look of and that fits comfortably. The harness should be snug but not too tight, and should distribute the weight evenly across your hips and legs. As you progress in your climbing career, you can consider additional factors such as the weight of the harness, the position and number of gear loops, and the materials used in the construction. Ultimately, the most important factor is to choose a harness that you feel confident and comfortable in, as this will help you focus on the climb and improve your overall performance.

2. Climbing Shoes
Choosing the right climbing shoes is essential for any climber, as they can greatly impact your performance and comfort on the rock or wall. When selecting climbing shoes, one important consideration is the level of aggressiveness. Aggressive shoes are designed for steep, technical climbing and feature a downturned toe and a tight fit. For beginner climbers, a neutral shoe with a flatter shape and more comfortable fit may be a better choice. Additionally, the type of rubber used in the sole of the shoe can affect its performance and durability. Some of the most popular rubber types include Vibram and Stealth, which offer different levels of grip and durability. Ultimately, the best way to choose the right climbing shoes is to try on several different pairs and consider your personal preferences for fit, comfort, and style. It’s important to remember that climbing shoes should fit snugly but not be painful, as this can lead to discomfort and even injury while climbing.

3. Belay Devices
Choosing the best belay device for the job is important for the safety and efficiency of the climb. There are two main types of belay devices: tube-style devices and braking-assisted devices. Tube-style devices, such as the ATC, use friction to control the rope and are a popular choice for beginner and intermediate climbers. They are simple to use, lightweight, and can be used for a variety of rope diameters. On the other hand, braking-assisted devices, such as the Petzl GriGri, use a camming mechanism to assist in holding the rope in the event of a fall. These devices are more expensive and can be heavier, but they offer additional safety features for more advanced climbers. When selecting a belay device, consider factors such as the type of climbing you will be doing, the diameter of the rope you will be using, and your personal preferences for handling and safety features. Ultimately, the best belay device is one that you feel comfortable and confident using, and that meets the safety requirements for your specific climbing situation.

4. Helmets
Choosing the right helmet for rock climbing is an important safety consideration for any climber. When selecting a helmet, there are a few key factors to consider. Firstly, the weight of the helmet should be taken into account, as a heavy helmet can become uncomfortable during long climbs. Materials used in helmet construction can include foam, plastic, or a combination of both. The foam provides impact absorption, while the plastic provides durability and protection from punctures. A combination of the two materials can offer the best of both worlds. Finally, the fit of the helmet is critical, as it needs to sit securely on the head without wobbling or shifting during a fall. When trying on helmets, ensure that there is a snug but comfortable fit, with no gaps or pressure points. The helmet should sit low on the forehead and cover the back of the head, while still allowing for full vision and hearing. Ultimately, the best helmet is one that offers both comfort and protection, and that meets the safety standards for the type of climbing you will be doing. Learn even more about helmets here.

5. Ropes
Choosing the right climbing rope is essential for a safe and enjoyable climbing experience. When selecting a rope, it’s crucial to consider factors like length, diameter, and features like dry treatment. The length of the rope will depend on the type of climb and the route’s length, with longer ropes generally being more versatile. The diameter of the rope is also important, as thicker ropes provide more durability and are better suited for high-traffic climbing areas. However, thinner ropes are lighter and easier to handle, making them a great option for longer climbs. Finally, dry treatment is an essential feature for climbers who frequently climb in wet conditions, as it prevents the rope from absorbing moisture and becoming heavy and hard to handle. Overall, the right rope choice will depend on individual preferences, the type of climbing you plan to do, and the conditions in which you’ll be climbing. 6. QuickDraws
Choosing the right QuickDraws for rock climbing is crucial for safety and comfort during the climb. QuickDraws consist of two carabiners and a sewn sling, and are used to connect the climber’s rope to the bolts or anchors in the rock face. When selecting QuickDraws, it’s important to consider factors like weight, length, gate type, and strength rating. Lightweight QuickDraws are ideal for long climbs, while longer QuickDraws allow for smoother rope movement and less drag. The gate type should also be considered, with wire gates being lighter and smoother to operate, while solid gates are stronger and more durable. Additionally, QuickDraws should have a high strength rating to ensure they can withstand the forces generated during a fall. Ultimately, the right QuickDraw choice will depend on individual preferences, the type of climb you plan to do, and the conditions in which you’ll be climbing. It’s important to invest in high-quality QuickDraws to ensure a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.
